Snowshoeing in the woods is a great way to experience the quiet, see signs of wildlife, and get exercise during winter. There are two ways to enjoy Sugarbush woods on snowshoes: either self-guided access to designated terrain or guided tours into Slide Brook Wildlife Management Area.

Guided Gate House Loop Tours

Explore the Gate House woods with one of our Outback Guides giving you insights on the area's natural features and  inhabitants.  Territory of black bear, moose, deer, coyote, bobcat, fisher, ermine, owl, turkey, & woodpecker. though actual critter sightings are rare, trekkers will learn to interpret tracks, scarred trees, nipped branches, and to recognize the sounds in the forest.

  • Duration: 1 - 1.5 Hours
  • Tour begins at 10:00 AM or 1:00 PM 
  • Meet at the Ski & Ride School desk in The Farmhouse
  • Please arrive early if renting equipment
  • Ages 9+
  • Under 18 yrs requires release signed by parent/guardian.
  • Snow boots required. Layered clothing and day pack recommended.
  • Conditions permitting.
  • Additional dates may be available with 24 hours notice and a minimum of 3 participants.

Dates/Times: 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM / Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday starting December 21, 2018 through March 31, 2019 and daily during holiday periods; Dec 26, 2018 - Jan 1, 2019, Jan 19 - 21, 2019 and Feb 16 - 24, 2019.

Rates: Includes guide and one lift ride up Gate House.

Guided Slide Brook Snowshoe Tours

Our Outback Guide leads your snowshoe adventure into the Slide Brook wilderness, territory of black bear, moose, deer, coyote, bobcat, fisher, ermine, owl, turkey, & woodpecker. Tours through the basin are physically warming and mentally stimulating as natural features found in passing give clues to the lives of Slide Brook’s inhabitants. Though actual critter sightings are rare, trekkers will learn to interpret tracks, scarred trees, nipped branches, and to recognize the sounds in the forest.

  • 2.5-3 hrs
  • Meeting place: The Farmhouse (skier services building)
  • Under 18 yrs requires release signed by parent/guardian.
  • Snow boots required. Layered clothing and day pack recommended.
  • Conditions permitting.
  • Additional dates may be available with 24 hours notice and a minimum of 3 participants.
  • Ages 9+

Twilight Snowshoe Tours

Experience the mountain in a different light. Ride the last chair on the Gate House Quad and embark on your Twilight Snowshoe Adventure into the Gate House Trail, home territory of black bear, moose, deer, coyote, bobcat, fisher, ermine, owl, turkey, & woodpecker.

Snowshoeing is physically warming and mentally stimulating as natural features found in passing give clues to our Gate House Trail’s inhabitants. Though actual critter sightings are rare, our Outback Guide will teach trekkers how to interpret tracks, scarred trees, nipped branches, and to recognize the sounds in the forest. This is the perfect way to end the day with your family and transition into some great après at Rumbles or the Castlerock Pub.

  • Ages 9+
  • Under 18 yrs requires release signed by parent/guardian.
  • Please arrive by 3:30 PM
  • Tour begins at 3:45 PM
  • Duration: 1 - 1.5 Hours
  • Meet at the Ski & Ride School desk in The Farmhouse

Photography Outback Snowshoe Tours

Experience and capture the beauty of Sugarbush and the Mad River Valley with our guided photo tour through the Slide Brook Basin. Our photography workshops are centered on the incredible landscapes that we hike through at our mountain. Enjoy our favorite snowshoe trails equipped with a DSLR or an iPhone, while our experienced guides teach you the ins and outs of digital photography.

Small in student number, flexible in schedules, and diverse in topics, snowshoe photo tours can be tailored to fit your experience level.  You or your group will have over 3 decades of experience at your fingertips. Your photo snowshoe adventure is sure to be personalized, engaging and above all, fun.

  • Entry Level to professional 
  • Meet at the Ski & Ride School desk in The Farmhouse at 9:00 AM
  • 30 minute meet and greet session in the Morning Star conference room to learn about each other and groups needs
  • Please arrive 30 minutes early if renting snowshoe equipment and to meet guide
  • Snow boots required. Layered clothing and day pack recommended

  • Equipment required: Any camera with manual settings, including smartphone

Sugarbush is a Snowshoe Rental Center, with snowshoe rentals available at The Farmhouse skier services building at Lincoln Peak and the Rental Shop in the Mount Ellen Base Lodge.

Explore marked trails at both Lincoln Peak and Mt. Ellen.

Lincoln Peak: Gate House Snowshoe Trail, Warren House Trail, & Village Woods Trail
Mount Ellen: Lockwood Loop Trail, with a second trail under development

Sugarbush Self-Guided Snowshoe Trail Maps are also available at Guest Services, the Ski & Ride Schoolhouse, Lodging, and Rental Shops.

Dates/Times: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily (conditions permitting). Snow boots required. Layered clothing and daypack recommended.

Snowshoe Rental Rates: $30/pair per day at The Farmhouse skier services building at Lincoln Peak and the Rental Shop in the Mt. Ellen Base Lodge.
