This weekend is one of my favorites of the year. Often it is peak foliage, and many members of our community come together for a long weekend in the Valley...
“’I am starting to feel like I’m coming home when I get to Waitsfield’. . .’The entire town vibe is awesome’. . . ‘Classic Vermont.’” These are a few reader quotes from Ski Magazine’s latest resort rankings, where Sugarbush was rated the #2 overall resort in the East. The article goes on to say, “Readers attest that greater Waitsfield/Warren is possibly the prettiest ski town there is in the East…unspoiled by overdevelopment, still graced by working farms along the Mad River. Not surprisingly, living in a beautiful place makes the locals happy, as scores of readers attest.”
Many of us already felt this way, but it’s nice to hear the same sentiments from others. The Mad River Valley is a pretty special place, aesthetically and culturally. The social fabric of the Valley is quite strong, and the sense of community is fierce. While we think our skiing and riding is some of the best around, it’s the Mad River Valley ambiance that truly makes us stand out from the rest.
It’s appropriate that our Ski Magazine ranking focused so much on our community since October is the month we celebrate it. Our Community Weekend this upcoming weekend is a long-standing tradition where many winter residents arrive and begin preparations for the season-pass pick-up, gear preparation, and pre-season revelry. We fill the day with activities like the Warren Fire Department Pancake Breakfast, Win’s Resort Presentation, and tours of our newest projects (like a Gadd Brook Slopeside Weekend-long Open House, and displays of our new groomers and RFID gates), You’ll also find fun activities like the Kids Activity Camp, a Guided Dog-Friendly Foliage Hike (with me and my dog Scout), Pumpkin Carving, Snag Golf, A Magic Show, live music, and all of our mountain activities. It looks like foliage may be peaking this weekend, so hikes and scenic lift rides are a must.
In true October fashion, we’ll continue the festivities into Sunday with our annual Oktoberfest featuring Bavarian inspired food, drink, games, and the Mad Bavarian Brass Band. Help build camaraderie and friendly competition at the Keg Toss, Stein Hoist, and Football Toss. On Sunday, we also sponsor the Mad River Path Association’s annual fundraiser--the Mad Dash--down in Waitsfield. It’s a fun 5K or 10K where families (leave the dog at home for this one) are invited to compete along the back roads of the Valley. Swing by and say hello to John Egan and our team at the Sugarbush tent.
We look forward to seeing many of you this weekend up at the resort and around the Valley. Less than a month to go before snowmaking starts!
See you on the mountain,
