Important Tips For Parents
Returning Participants
It is highly recommended that you participate in one of the two weekends in December. Everyone’s skiing/riding needs to be re-evaluated at the start of the new season. We want to make sure that kids are in the proper group from the onset. Kids grow and things can change over the summer! Changing groups around in January is frustrating for everyone. If you are unable to attend one of the first two weekends, email the Blazer Program Supervisor Mickey Stone at
mstone@sugarbush.com.
New Participants
Because having balanced groups is so important to the overall success of this program, this season it is required that new participants attend one of the two weekends in December. New Blazers will have their skiing/riding evaluated by the coaching staff, so they can be put in the correct group at the very beginning of the season. If you cannot attend any of these sessions, consider a Seasons Pass to the Bear Den as an option.

Mountaineering Blazers are encouraged to attend every session to maximize fun, learning and group consistency.
Mountaineering Blazers features two of Sugarbush’s best and most-respected coaches, Rick Hale and Brian “Diggity” Daigle. In addition to being an expert alpine skier, telemarker, skate skier, ski jumper and all around ripper, for the last two years Rick has placed in the top three in the Sugarbush-Mad River Glen Rando Rally, routinely beating competitors less than half his age. Diggity is one of the most recognizable faces at Sugarbush, inspiring countless skiers with his smooth mix of power, agility and positivity. He was also voted Best Skier at Sugarbush for 2008 by his fellow employees. Both coaches are OEC/EMT-B certified and know all of Sugarbush’s terrain better than just about anybody.
Mountaineering Blazers take adventure and fun seriously, blending smart decision-making and route-finding, group dynamics and leadership, snow and terrain evaluation, shelter building and backcountry rescue, and self-sufficiency and constant preparedness, to become true skiing and riding gurus. Included in Mountaineering Blazers is an overnight campout with Coaches Rick and Diggity at one of Sugarbush’s upper mountain lodges, like Allyn’s or the Gables at Castlerock.
Mountaineering Blazers is for advanced skiers and riders only. Mountaineering Blazers should already be comfortable on most Black/advanced terrain and have a high willingness to explore steeps, trees, bumps, park, and the backcountry. ***Please be aware that all team members must have climbing skins and a backpack with food, water, extra clothing, repair gear, and first aid supplies, plus either Telemark, alpine touring gear or a split-board. If you are seriously interested in racing, you should look into the race programs offered by the Green Mountain Valley School.
Very Important!
For participants in Race Blazers, a hard shell race specific helmet is required. The specifications for such helmets as required by the FIS are: Crash Helmets – All competitors and forerunners are obliged to wear a crash helmet that conforms to the competition equipment specifications. This is valid for all training as well for the race. Helmets used in FIS Snowsports must be specifically designed and manufactured for the particular event and must bear a CE mark and conform to recognized ad appropriate standards such as CEE 1077, US2040, ASTM F2040, SNELL S98, RS98, etc.
All participants in Race Blazers will be required to wear an approved Spine Protector such as the (2010 POC Spine Ergo) while gate training. Information about race specific helmets and spine protectors can be found on the internet.
If you do not already own a pair of race GS skis, it would be a good idea to purchase a pair. Race skis are more stable at higher speeds. They will also give you much more edge grip on a hard surface. Both of these qualities make the skis safer on a race-course, much more so than twin tips or recreational all-mountain skis.
SKI RACING SAFETY IS NO ACCIDENT. For more information on ski racing safety check out the Kelley Brush Foundation.
RACE OPTION LIMITED TO 16 PARTICIPANTS FOR 2010-2011 Please call 888-651-4827 or email us at skiandride@sugarbush.com to book or for more information.

We take the mountain at its best … sprinkle in fresh snow … dump on world-renowned skiers like John Egan and only the finest Sugarbush coaches, like the VT North Pro Team members Jesse Murphy, Chris Parkinson and Dean Decas and you wind up thigh deep in the best expert coaching this side of Chamonix. Just sayin’.
Bush Pilots must be expert skiers of 18+ years in good physical condition, who ski aggressively on black diamond or double black diamond terrain. This group is fast-paced and demanding, with lift-rides often being the only reprieve. Must respond well to heckling and friendly ridicule.
Bush Pilots must have a Sugarbush All Mountain Pass and are encouraged attend as many sessions as possible so as not to miss out on any adventures or guest coaches. With so many world-class skiers and coaches living or visiting at Sugarbush, you just never know who might show up.
As group interest dictates, additional early morning, late afternoon or off-site adventures may be planned. Participants should be well equipped with fat skis, good bindings (alpine, randonee, or tele) and should seriously consider backpacks with food, water, backcountry gear, and extra layers.
Minimum 20 participants. Maximum 28 participants.
