Vermont Festival of the Arts


Waitsfield, Vermont -- The towns of the Mad River Valley, Vermont, play host to one of the most diverse art festivals in New England.  With nearly 120 arts-related events and activities, the Vermont Festival of the Arts is designed to "entertain the soul, enlighten the mind, and energize the spirit".

Festival Highlights:

Sunday August 4
Festival Picnic at Lareau Farm. This is a free event open to the public featuring summer arts activities, live music from The Grift and Haywire and a fireworks show.

Monday, August 5
Taste of the Valley at Lincoln Peak, Sugarbush Resort. The Taste highlights local restaurants, farmers and food purveyors from in and around the Valley showing off their talents in sample-form. Call the Festival Gallery for tickets: 802-496-6682 or purchase at the Festival Booth at the Farmer's Market. $50 per person.

August 1 – September 1
Big Red Barn Art Show at Lareau Farm. The Big Red Barn Art Show will feature two- and three-dimensional fine art pieces and includes paintings, etchings, monoprints and sculpture from over 40 local artists.

Thursday, August 8
Art in the Garden Tour on Bridge Street. The landscape artists of Broadleaf Landscape Architecture will host this tour of three beautiful gardens they have conceived, designed, constructed and maintained. Call 802-496-6682 for reservations. $25 per person.

Saturday/Sunday, August 10-11
Open Studio and Gallery Weekend at the Festival Gallery, Waitsfield. Open Studio Weekend gives you a chance to tour the area for a close up view of how art is created.

Friday/Saturday, August 16-17
The Great Vermont Plein Air Paint-Out on Bridge Street in Historic Waitsfield Village. Painting takes place 9 am – 5 pm Friday and Saturday. On Saturday afternoon, artists gather for a Sidewalk Art Show and Sale. Children can participate at the Children's Painting Tent.

Sunday, August 25
Barns & Bridges of the Mad River Valley. For many the classic Vermont postcard holds images of barns on the hillside or bridges above rushing streams. The Mad River Valley has a good collection of both! Take this self-guided tour with information at each site. Bring your camera as there are instructions at each location to take the very best picture.

Thursdays in August
Crafty Kids Festival Series. In partnership with Joslin Memorial Library, there are five workshops in the Crafty Kids Series: Make Your Own Book, Community Mobile, Tie-Dye!, Frame-It and Cartooning for Teens. Each workshop will be from 3-5 pm on each Thursday in August at the Joslin Library.
