Outside Magazine Long before western resorts opened up their gates, eastern skiers were hiking into much safer (just bring your compass) backcountry. While the terrain's not as sexy as the West’s, there are still powder stashes to be found.

The resort bought a snowcat with a cabin on it for some fancy midmountain dinners. Then saw the machine’s real value: Now on powder days, 12 skiers can load into the cat and head up for first tracks. It’s not the backcountry, but with nobody else out there, it feels like it. $75;
